Are you wondering what to see in Bosnia and Herzegovina? It was the first country in The Balkans region that we explored and throughout the trip, we visited 5 places but that didn’t limit our experience only to city views – while driving through the country you get to see the exquisite nature, rural places of the country and the magnificent mountains that spread across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Truthfully, there were more places that we wanted to explore but since we visited the country at the beginning of wintertime, we faced harsh rainy days despite that, we also didn’t want to push our motorhome to the limits by driving it through high mountains in the national parks. But that is one more reason to go back to Bosnia and Herzegovina and explore the rest of the country.
Banja Luka
The first city that we visited, driving from Croatia, was Banja Luka. It is located in the Republika Srpska and is the second-largest city in the country. Truthfully, it wasn’t the prettiest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina but it is worth the visit to learn about the history, visit Kastel Fortress, and see the impressive Ferhadija Mosque and Christ the Savior Orthodox Cathedral.
Jajce
Jajce is famous for its impressive Pliva Waterfall just by the old town, the town’s historic importance as well as the Jajce Fortress. The waterfall truly was magnificent and worth the visit and the fact that the town isn’t very touristy made the exploring even more calming and allowed us to enjoy the sights to the fullest.
Sarajevo
Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a must for visiting. The city is full of different cultures, beautiful architecture, a colorful old town, and amazing food. We spent only one day and although we didn’t explore all of the recommended sights that we found online, we still managed to see a lot of the city.
The most intriguing spot to visit is the Latin Bridge where a very important historical event happened that started World War I – the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria, and his wife, Sophie. It was a surreal feeling being by the bridge and knowing what a history it holds. We enjoyed walking around the old town, the Sebilj Fountain which is legendarily besieged by pigeons, and the Yellow Fortress. I would love to visit Sarajevo again one day as it was the most different and intriguing city I have ever been before.
Mostar
Mostar, a short ride from Sarajevo, is one of the most famous towns to visit by tourists and I could see why when visiting myself – it has a dreamy old town, the famous Mostar Old Bridge which leads over the Neretva River, and the coppersmith’s bazaar which allows you to purchase handcrafted items by the locals. One day was completely enough for us to see the beauty of the town and I would recommend visiting it.
Blagaj
Blagaj, a village close to Mostar, is famous for the Buna river and the main sightseeing object, Dervish House – a historic monastery built on the cliffs by the water. The village is quite calm and by the river, near the monastery, there are places to buy local souvenirs and many restaurants where to enjoy delicious cuisines.
I believe that Bosnia and Herzegovina isn’t that popular among tourists and adventurers because of the sad history it has and the fact that you still need to be cautious in some places. But I believe that it’s such a colorful, culturally diverse country with astonishing nature and mountains that everyone should see at least once in their lifetimes.
